Jebal
Shams, sometimes called Sun Mountain, is nearly the highest mountain in Oman at
3009
metres and has been referred to as the Grand Canyon of Oman. There is a vertical drop of 1000 metres to the
wadi and villages below and the air is cooler and good for summertime camping.
Jebal
Shams is famous for one of the most impressive ancient engineering
works. Some of the mountain terraces are constructed on an overhang with a sheer
drop of hundreds of metres. It is also abundant with marine fossils.
The
Jebal Shams range and the canyon is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and
beautiful natural landforms in this country.
And
just as spectacular as Jebal Shams itself is the scenery and the villages, both
old and new, that you will pass as you head towards this magnificent
mountain. Depending on your perspective, you might be more impressed by
what you see on the ground as you travel the land than from what you see from
the mountain top!
