Oman
is an amazing place for exploration and discovery, especially by foot in its
spectacular mountain scenery. The country is the best kept tourism secret
of the Gulf region, if not the entire Middle East, having striking scenery,
friendly people and year-round sunshine. This book introduces the
uninitiated and curious to the myriad pathways and fabulous staircases cris-crossing
the country’s fascinating mountains. There, the climate is almost
perfect for walking and provides relief from the hot plains and coastal area.
The
book describes some of the authors’ favorite walks, ranging from the
well-frequented and easily followed donkey trail to precipitous cliff paths and
adventurous mountain scrambles which may require some climbing experience.
Approximately 50 itineraries are included, with the option to vary many of them;
some are short, local to the Capital Area around Muscat and can be completed in
a few hours whereas others require a more serious approach. carrying equipment
for overnight camps. All are situated in the northern part of Oman, the Hajara
Mountains (split into East, Ash
Shorqiyah, and
West, Al Gharb.). Detailed sketch maps
(there are over 25) have been drawn and these are complemented by a description
concentrating on the main features and way marks, interspersed with notes on
history, flora, fauna and general interest. The book is illustrated by some 75
stunning color photographs.
