Game fisherman are liable to encounter hundreds of fish species along the varied coastline of Oman but only a small percentage of those are of much interest in terms of sport and food value, though all have their place in the ecosystem and deserve respect. Those species most commonly caught plus some oddities, which you may encounter, are covered in this guide.

The fish in this guide are not grouped in any particular order and where there may be some confusion as to the identification of a species or family I have done my best to clarify the issue. Locals have different names for fish all over the world, and fish that may seem the same are in fact different or a subspecies of that fish. For example the Indian Ocean sailfish is the same subspecies as the Pacific sailfish for the purpose of International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) records. The difference in size between the Indian and Pacific sailfish is noticeable, the records being 65.9kg/145Ib (Indian) from Malindi, East Africa and 100.24kg/22llb (Pacific) caught off Santa-Cruz , Ecuador . The Atlantic record is 64kg/141lbloz which is also well below the Pacific record.

Clear identification clues are presented plus some interesting background information, angling tips and taste value. Combined with colour illustrations and photographs, there should be no question about identifying what you've caught or seen with the exception of the bigeye and yellowfin tuna. They are quite alike and require a close look before you can decide which fish is which. Enjoy.
