About this location: The fourteen footprints of
Prophet Saleh's sacred camel, as mentioned in the Holy Quran, rest here.
On the main street of 23 July Street, within walking distance from the Haffa
House Hotel there is a site where the footprints are embedded in rock. The
footprints have been fenced off for protection.
One version of this story is as follows. A tribe
wanted to slaughter the camel of Prophet Saleh and God forbid the killing of
this animal. The slaughter took place anyway. It has been said that
the camel was pregnant and that upon slaughtering the animal the baby escaped
and ran away into a cave below but the baby was never seen again.
It has been said that God was so angered by the killing
of this animal against His wishes that a flood came upon the town's people with
such force and fury that the entire tribe was abolished.
To this day there are two highly visible marks from the
feet of the camel. And around the area of these marks is said to be the
blood stain from the slaughter. This is seen by the dark markings on the
rocky surface. The cave is still there where it has been said that the
baby camel ran but it is considered dangerous to enter into it.
There is also a small hole in the rocky surface which people believe is from
the stick or cane of the Prophet Saleh.
