About this location: Taqah is 30 kilometres
from Salalah on the coast and is the third largest town in Dhofar.
(Salalah is largest followed by Thumrayt.) In town you will find tarmac
roads which help you get around to visit the small forts and Taqah
Castle.
Taqah is an old town with an interesting fort and some
typical old Dhofari houses. The burial site of Her Majesty, the mother of
His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, is located in Taqah. On the beach you
will still be able to find old boats held together by coconut fibers instead of
nails.
Taqah is famous for sardines, which are sun dried and
used as cattle fodder and fertilizers. Many of Taqah's inhabitants are
traditionally fishermen.
Nearby Taqah is a limestone quarry which provides many of
the building blocks used in the construction of homes and other buildings.
It is a limestone quarry and the blocks are white in color. Perhaps this
explains the view of Taqah from up high. Next to Taqah is a mountain and a
spectacular view from the top reveals a town that goes as far as the eye can see
and it has a wonderful white glow, almost as if covered by a thin blanket of
snow.
