About this location: In a most unsuspecting
visit to a mosque in Salalah you will find the grave sight of Prophet Emran, the
father of Moses who was born in Egypt around 1571 BC. In a single story
building, long and narrow, lies the body of the Prophet in what is a most
extraordinary sight. Though told ahead of time that his grave is long, we
were not prepared for just how long it really is.
By crude measurements we estimate that the grave is over
33 yards long or just over 30 meters. Some people say that if you measure
on one side you will not get the same measurement on the other.
Unfortunately, we didn't learn of this myth until after our visit though
we did measure three times on the same side the same way and arrived at the same
crude number.
The walls of this room which houses the grave are very
plain. At the entrance is a verse from the Holy Quran which hangs at the head
end of the room and sunlight streams in from the exits. It is peacefully
quiet with the smell of bakhoor lingering throughout.
The grave itself is covered with a cloth from head to toe
and prayer rugs are draped over at the head end. Beneath the cloth appears
to be a cement covering of sorts as if to seal the grave. A wood railing
runs along both sides with a marble gravestone at the head and foot ends but
nothing is written.
It is a very moving experience to be here.
