About this location: The town of Marbat was
formerly the capital of Dhofar and lies 66 kilometers east of Salalah on the
coast. The name Marbat is believed to have come from Marbat Al Khail,
which literally means a place where horses are tied. It was famous in the
9th century for breeding and exporting horses as well as for exporting
frankincense. It is now known for the export of dried fish and abalone and
most of the inhabitants are fishermen.
Marbat with its picturesque bays and inlets consists of
many old merchants' houses, which display carved doors and windows, courtyards
and protruding service towers. It has an old as well as a new
harbor. The almost white sand and the beautiful light blue waters are
beautiful and demand that you visit to see it for yourself.
Marbat also has a fort or castle which is located near
the sea. It has been renovated but some old stone work and carved wooden
windows can still be seen.
The people of Marbat are renowned for their unmatched
skills in composing and playing music.
