Nizwa
acquired its importance in the past because of its central location as the
meeting point for the interior, Muscat and Dhofar regions. Thus serving as
the link for a large part of the country.
It was
built and made the capital in the 17th
century, during the reign of Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Yaarubi in 1641
Construction spanned 30 years Nizwa was
famous for trade, art and religion. It is one of the oldest and most
famous forts in Oman and is probably Oman's most visited
national monument besides being the biggest of its kind in the Gulf region.
The
main part of the fort is its enormous round tower that rises 115 feet above the
ground and has a diameter of 150 feet. There are 24 openings all around
the top of the tower for mortar fire. The strong foundations of the fort
which go 30 metres in to the ground.
