As you start to near Jebal Shams, you
will travel through an area called Wadi Ghul where you will find villages and
fields of farming. It's a very lovely journey through this rather secluded
and remote town.
As a typical tourist there was one
element that we found particularly fascinating and that is the deserted villages
that are carbonating, a testimony to their age. When viewing these
deserted villages, the first sense we had was that they were built so high up on
the side of the rocky mountain. But upon further observation we came to
find what appears to be water markings on the rock's surface just beneath the
level of the now deserted village. As amateurs in this field of study, we
concluded there must have been a large body of water passing through this now
very dry area, and for quite some time, to have left such markings on that kind
of rocky surface, and now, it's left a mark in history as well. In the photos these markings are not so visible but in person, they are all too obvious. It's a "must see" on your list of visits!
